YAKIMA — A Yakima man died early Saturday after being stabbed outside an apartment building in the 200 block of East E Street.
Police were still looking for the stabbing suspect late Saturday afternoon.
"We have a couple of leads," Yakima Police Capt. Greg Copeland said.
According to Copeland, 46-year-old Steven W. Sterling was stabbed in his upper chest on the sidewalk in front of the building and managed to make it inside before collapsing in the hallway about 3:15 a.m.
Sterling was taken to Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center, where he died, Copeland said.
Police are looking for the man who was seen running from the scene. He's described as being about 40 years old, 5-foot-9 and 190 pounds, with hair that might be pulled back into a ponytail. He was wearing a blue shirt and blue jeans that may have been cut-offs.
Copeland said Sterling and the suspect were involved in an argument — "not exactly sure over what" — just before the stabbing. The argument escalated into a physical fight, during which the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed Sterling once in the chest, Copeland said.
